Well, it has been another busy run of events taking just one week off after the RBC Heritage back in mid-April.
Valspar Championship
A tough course which is always enjoyable to play. A T21 for the week and nothing interesting to share to be honest.
Wells Fargo Championship
I was really looking forward to this week having Luke caddy for me. It started when Luke was watching Stewart Cink win at the RBC Heritage with son Regan on the bag and he asked me when he could caddy for me. As it turned out my caddy James had his 40th birthday this week and his wife planned a celebration, so the window of the opportunity presented itself. I remember caddying for Luke back in 2014 at the US kids at Walt Disney World.
It was great for him to get a real look inside the ropes, a missed cut was not how we wanted it to be, but I can truly say how special this has been for me to have Luke caddie and walk with me down the fairways. He wants to do what I do, and he fully believes in his mind if he continues to work hard and keeps improving, he is going to have an opportunity.
We got home to welcome ‘Ryder’ to the family, what a bundle of joy
PGA Championship
This golf course is a real beast, have good memories of finishing well the last time it was hosted here. Started the week off working on shoes from @footjoy and matching outfits. The old kiltie was my favourite from the week which coincided with my best round, is there something in that? Luke also celebrated his 17th birthday.
What a week, really had it going in the 2nd round and was 6 under at one point but the finishing holes where some of the toughest we had played and a 70 felt good. Two further rounds of 73 left me T30 which looking at some of the train wrecks over the weekend I felt fairly pleased with the result. What to say about Phil, I do not usually comment on wins, but this was something special and one for the record books, it was clear the crowds were willing him to win, whether this energy from the crowd spurred him on we will not know but still an amazing feat to win his 6th major.
Charles Schwab Challenge
I really like this golf course; it suits my eye so went into the week feeling very confident. Opening rounds of 68 & 70 had me well placed and a 3rd round 64 pushed me well up the leader board. A closing 68 resulted in a T3 and a satisfying week all round. We enjoyed an extremely proud moment with @lukepoults24 verbally committing to the University of Florida @gatorsmgolf. Luke also continued his run of events at @thedyejuniorinvitational hosted at crooked stick with a bizarre event; started off bad, 8 over after 9 than goes on a tear over the next 27 holes bogey free 7 under. On his last hole lips out for eagle, goes to his knees as he thought he had holed it and dislocated his left knee………paramedics were called, repositioned the kneecap and finished the round. He decided to play the last rd. after all clear from the Doctor and manged to stay up around the top of the leader board through 9 before falling back but what a performance giving it 100% shows me, he has what it takes going forward.
Palmetto Championship
First time hosting a PGA event and what a great golf course Congaree is, even the halfway hut served steak pies with HP sauce, can you believe that! Also have to say one of the coolest trophy I have seen. A steady week resulted in a T25 and on to the US Open.
Average start to the championship & had work to do on Friday however a nice 66 took care of business. A further 71 & 68 ended up as a T26 but what an amazing week, as I said the fans were fantastic and a real pleasure to play for during a beautiful summer week in England, 3 birdies on the par 3 16th was such a buzz.
US Open
It has been 10 years since we were last back here, for a bit of fun I went back through my archive to see what outfits I was wearing, setting trends back in the day! We all know how hard this championship is and the USGA have embraced this reputation by introducing the 19th hole, what a great concept.
Played really stable through 2 rd.’s and a 68 on Saturday had me T15 and in position for a great finish. Sunday was Father’s Day and received nice cards from the family, after 11 holes I was level par on the Rd and went on to shoot 7 over for the last 7 holes to finish T40……..really no words I cannot remember the last time I felt so disgusted with myself.
Travelers Championship
The last of a run of 7 events before just 1 week off and then over to the UK for the Scottish Open and the 149th Open. An opening 68 & 66 had me placed nicely going into the weekend, 2 under after 6 holes on Saturday and all well until a few stumbles on the home run resulted in a level par Rd. Sunday shot 2 over and finished T36,nothing more to say.
I feel my game is good, currently 17th in the Ryder Cup world points table so looking forward to playing across the pond and lots of ranking points available to make that Ryder Cup in September. By the time I write the next blog we will know if I am part of the team.
