Holiday Season

BlogBlog 2021

Well folks another year has nearly passed, one of highs and lows and another possible pandemic facing us but let’s be positive as we have dealt with these the last two years and as humans, we are resilient.

Ryder Cup

Nothing makes me prouder than to represent @rydercupteameurope. The result wasn’t how we thought this would play out and you must respect the golf the USA team played. We had a good group; these things don’t come around that often and its special to put the shirt on. Its special to get around all these guys in a way that you would not imagine, it means a lot to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup and that’s why it hurt, and you saw all the emotions from us on the final day.

I don’t know if I will get the opportunity to go again and it’s time for a changing of the guard with the European team, we saw how sweeping changes reinvigorated the USA, Tiger was not in, Phil had a radio in his ear & they’ve handed the baton over. In the team room on Saturday night there were a couple of emotional people speaking, you just wish you were 20 years old again. It’s hard when you get old, and you know there’s not many years left, and the best years of those Ryder Cups are behind you. We need the same thing to happen in Europe, it’s time for our young golfers to step up to the plate. @padraigharrington and Caroline gave us a wonderful atmosphere and vibe in the team room and the defeat did not detract from how we bonded as a team, creating lifelong friendship.

Congratulations to team USA on a dominant win. This is sport and the ebbs and flows of this incredible Ryder Cup has shown us through the years that winning is not easy and this trophy changes hands.

Shriners Children’s Open

It was time to get back on the horse, I played, I missed the cut but, in my eyes, I didn’t play either. I wanted & needed to come back, I guess I was tried and disappointed from a team perspective so for me it’s about playing strong in the closing events for the year.

Spent two weeks in Vegas, one of the positive aspects was going to watch the fight @gysyking101 ! the downside is doing the laundry ready for the next week….

The CJ Cup

After a missed cut it was good to have a no-cut event to gain some momentum and had a solid week shooting 66,67,67,70. Sunday was tricky weather conditions and a closing 70 left me T18 but nevertheless quite satisfied.

Austin Texas @f1

You all know I am a big fan of @f1 so with the circus hitting Austin for the week I had the opportunity to play with @landonorris & @zbrownceo from @mclaren, next time it’s their turn to host on the track and get the cars out!

Whilst in town why not also play a rd. of golf with @carlossainz55 from @scuderiaferrari check out PGA Tour https://www.pgatour.com/video.html to view the day, we had some great fun.

Family Time

We have not been to @albanybahamas since early in the year so was fantastic to spend a week with family and friends. Still during the week, I hit the range as still 4 events to play before the end of the year.

WTT Mexico

I like playing Mayakoba, I got to play again with @carlossainz55 & @rickiefowler 9 hole practise rd on the Tuesday which was great for the tour to allow Carlos to play with us as that usually never happens, oh boy we had some fun with Carlos’s caddy, a trick we have pulled a few times in Pro-am’s filling his golf bag up with water bottles every few holes, after a while he could not stand the bag up it was getting so heavy…. Look at the video on pgatour.com to see his face at the end when we started pulling out the bottles.

Felt good about my game and opened nicely with a 66, 2nd Rd I was 3 under on the 16th and sometimes this sport throws interesting scenarios, this was one of them. Non-committal to a shot turned a potential great tournament into packing my bags and heading home from what looked like a T10 heading into the weekend.

Cannot remember the last time I have been so disappointed with the outcome, I must evaluate why and move upwards, poor focus is usually the culprit but why did it happen?

Houston Open

Home of my win 3 years ago, although a different course. Never really got it going and ended up with a 2nd miss cut in a row making three in total since the Ryder Cup. Just not good enough.

DP World Championship

We were very proud parents to see @lukepoults24 sign for @gatorsmgolf. It will be a challenge as part of his next steps in life to become a great student and golf player, @uflordia has it all to make it happen by working hard.

From Houston headed straight to Dubia for the closing @europeantour event. I want to congratulate all involved in the announcement of @dpworld continued commitment to golf by announcing the DP World Tour as from the 2022 season. Yes, they are my sponsor so you may think I have to make such a statement but believe me having been involved with them and what they are doing for golf with the Emirates Golf Federation is fantastic. I spent an afternoon at a clinic for making golf open to everyone and meet Adem & Chris who both have cerebral palsy and manage to play golf. Try hitting a ball with an unstable base like I did, and this brings home the challenges they face, however they have preserved and receive a pleasure from playing this game.

Heading into the event, I dropped to 55th in the world so I needed a strong week to get back inside the top 50. Things did not go according to plan on the first day and an opening 73 was not what I planned. A 69 & 67 put me well placed for a strong finish on Sunday, I left a few out there, noticeable not birding the 18th from the greenside bunker but a 67 resulted in a T6 and moved me up 6 spots to 50th.

Shark Shoot Out

Played with @charleshowell3 in an event I really enjoy and have won in the past, having @lukepoults24 on the bag made it even more special. Sadly, back spasm effected my performance and a 8th place finish was very frustrating and disappointing.

Looking back at the year I started 48th and a slow start dropped me down to 66th by the time of the PGA championship. A steady summer had me back up to 46th but slowly creeped up to 55th before a strong showing in Dubia got me back to 50th. At the time of writing this I am currently standing at 53rd. I will not qualify automatically for the Masters, however there are 2 world rankings qualifying and 2 more dates to get into the top 50 so I need a fast start in the middle east in the new year.
Looking ahead to my 46th birthday next January it becomes harder to compete against the young talent on tour, but I will spend the off season working on my fitness and my game to come out even stronger.

I would like to thank you all for your support during the year, it really does mean a lot to me, and I enjoy sharing my life with you on social media.

I wish you all the best for the festive season and see you in the new year.
