Where to start, what an amazing week in so many ways! Decided to get in Monday and ease myself into the week, taking into account the weather forecast for the first few days. Terry Mundy comes over from the UK for a 3-week run, having caddied for me for all my Masters appearances. It’s an arrangement we have between us and James (my regular PGA caddy) is fine with that. @foot joy delivered a nice package with my Pro/SL shoes for the US Masters and my monogram on the back.
Managed to get 7 holes with Jon Rahm before the thunder and lighting arrived and that was it for the day. I mentioned the 5th hole changes now at 495 yds when I had the chance to play before the Dell Match play. My yardage books here show the difference (old 455 yds on the left).
(post tournament note; made par every day / Driver – 3H twice – 4I –twice)
My dad and a good friend Andy Day from my home area in the UK who gave me 1500 pounds 24 years ago to help play some tournaments arrived to join me along with Dan from Lake Nona. So, it was a boys’ week with Luke coming up for the weekend after school. Wednesday Par 3; I had Andy on the bag to let him enjoy the experience. It really is something special and the patrons make the atmosphere unique.
To mark playing the US Masters and freshen up my wardrobe I designed and had green trousers made and some special ‘tartans’ by a bespoke company with a redo in a modern, old school style. Currently working on how we can re-create these in a lightweight fabric. Will share with you the results before the summer if it comes off, hope so as it’s time to put some flare back into my wardrobe.
Thursday – real solid start hitting 17 greens in regulation and opening up with a 68. Friday – not as solid, still under par and good position for the weekend. Saturday – great day with Tiger shooting a 68 to his 67. The atmosphere was something special! Sunday – 2nd to last group out. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be – a couple of mistakes with a double bogey on 12th proved costly closing with a 73 and a T12 (which automatically qualifies me for next year). But a day we will remember as @tigerwoods comeback was incredible! What he has done for the game of golf can’t be quantified. We all owe a lot to him for that!
After the US Masters I flew home and did not head to Hilton Head till Wednesday night. I know the course well and needed to calm down after the giddy heights from the US Masters.
I have a good record around this course, fits my eye well and 3 rounds of 70, 67, 67 put me in the last pairing out with DJ. To be honest this is the 2nd year running I have been in this position – a 75 last year and a 73 this year ending up T10 is damm right disappointing to say the least. I don’t know if it was the lag from the Masters week before. You all know I handle the pressure situation, it was just one of those days. I did not birdie the 2nd par 5, made sloppy bogey on the 3rd and that kind of set my day. The positive is I am putting myself in these positions to have a chance of winning regularly at the age of 43 which really makes me feel good going into the summer schedule.
Great week – playing in a 2-man team format and really happy to play with Sam Horsfield @hr59sam giving him another start on the PGA tour. I have mentioned Sam before, a young English lad who grew up and studied in Florida. I met him 8 years ago as a young lad and played 9 holes at Lake Nona. He is currently playing the European Tour and Terry is managing him back there so he stayed on representing Sam and James came back on the bag.
We made the cut on the number. After the 3rd round we were 32nd place and then in the final round really ‘ham & egged‘. It as a team finishing T9 with a 67 in the Foursome (Alternate Shot) shooting the best round of the day!
I have had a great and refreshing 2 weeks off practicing and playing with Luke and Joshua who had his 1st birdie this Saturday! Heading to the PGA championship Tuesday at Bethpage Black NYC, I am excited to announce my new partnership with @DP_World as their global ambassador. DP World’s commitment to driving innovation in golf and inspiring the next generation aligns perfectly with my own passion for talent development. We will be producing lots of content going forward so looking forward to sharing with you all.
I may play Colonial next week otherwise a further 3 weeks off before the US Open and then over to Europe for a 3 weeks run playing the Irish, Scottish and the Open. Then back here for the WGC in Memphis. Currently 28th in the world rankings and 44th in the FedEx Cup so looking to improve on that in the next few months.
Going to be a fun summer and I look forward to sharing my time spent with you all on and off the course.
